Update on Türkiye: Expulsions

We are very grateful for the opportunities that our CM brothers and sisters have in Türkiye. The congregations and communities are growing and thriving. This however, is not without some resistance from the government. Since religious freedom officially prevails in Türkiye, the authorities are trying to interfere in an indirect manner. In recent years, Türkiye has increasingly been taking action against foreigners who testify to their Christian faith or individuals who work in ministry. Refusal of entry permits, even for Turkish citizens with a foreign background and other individuals, as well as expulsions are increasing.

The Constitutional Court of Türkiye in Ankara has now declared the expulsion of nine foreign Christians to be legal by a majority of 7 to 6 votes. The individuals are guilty for alleged ‘missionary activities.’ The nine plaintiffs are among more than 30 foreign Christians who have received an ‘N-82’ code from the Turkish authorities because they are ‘religiously active’ in the country. The ‘N-82’ codes classify the Christians as a ‘risk to national security.’ The nine recently expelled individuals can now appeal against the verdict in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Since 2018, there have been 185 Christians who have been expelled or are no longer allowed to enter the country, including spouses and family members of Turkish nationals.

Pray for our brothers and sisters in Turkey that they may be strengthened by the power of the Spirit and the protection of the Almighty.
