What is Communio Messianica?
The Why and What
Communio Messianica (CM) has evolved over the past decade to address a compelling historical reality—the reality that for the first time in history there is a resurgence of conversion of Muslims to become followers of Jesus Christ. We call them Muslim Background Believers (MBBs). Interestingly, this resurgence has gone in parallel with vast increase of Islamic influence on the world stage since the late 1970’s!
In essence, CM is a prayerfully inspired response, guided by the Holy Spirit, to a major phenomenon of Muslims being called out of darkness to embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is resulting in the rapid growth of large communities of believers coming from a Muslim background throughout the Muslim World and also among Muslim immigrants to the West.
At the heart of CM is the love of Christ for all Muslim communities and a yearning for these communities and individuals to have the freedom to judge for themselves about their own spiritual and religious identity. Every MBB has relatives, friends and relations who are still Muslim. They are dear to us with the hope that with an open and free mind there is a spirit of mutual acceptance and understanding.
Yet, we must face the reality that although we accept Muslims as fellow human beings who are loved by our Lord, many MBBs face persecution, rejection—and even they lack the right to declare their new identity in Christ publicly. Even, when there are indigenous churches in many Muslim-majority countries, MBBs are prevented from forming their own churches, and they go underground.
To address these developments and concerns, CM aims at becoming a global movement founded and led by MBBs who exist in significant numbers in all Muslim-majority countries, and most other countries, both east and west, totaling around 80 countries. CM aims to serve these MBBs to address the need for a sense of identity, belonging, and legitimization - thus constituting a community (Ummah) in their newfound faith in Jesus Christ.
The identity of Muslim Background Believers
The identity of MBBs is best expressed in the words of the Apostle Peter
“… you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation (ummah), God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light … once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy…” 1 Peter 2:9-10
